Lighten and Brighten Any Room For Spring Have you ever felt like brightening up your home, but never did because you had no clue where to begin? It’s a challenge that people face every day that does not have to be as difficult as it seems. The obstacle in this situation was converting a bland neutral room into a one with a little punch and color. Breathing some new life into an old room can be cost efficient, and show tremendous results without replacing furniture. A neutral room can be a little too safe. The accents in the room seemed like a good choice at the time, considering they were following the general color scheme, but now we are tired of the neutral approach and would like to add some color without replacing large items in the room. Bringing in splashes of strong colors can add energy and create a warm comfortable feel in almost any environment. Here are just a few examples of what we did to change our own setting. As you can see before the change a vast majority of the room accents fell in line with the basic neutral tones of the room. Now granted, neutral is a safe direction to go, but it does create a fairly bland and almost cold room. The first thing we chose to do was replace the area rug. The old area rug matched the existing sofa, and even though it did provide some color, it lacked contrast. We decided to go with a rug that was warm and vibrant in color. It allows the color and contours of the chair and sofa to stand out. The area rug also provides the backdrop and sets the tone of the room. Let’s take a look at the coffee table. The old coffee table was not a bad choice for the room. It was a rich deep, color and seemed to fall in line with the rest of the colors, but we thought we could do better. After a good long look, we thought it seemed a little heavy and we wanted to lighten the room a little. To do this we went with a glass top coffee table. The benefit of this is it allows the rug to show through, bringing the color up through the table. Also, the sweeping lines of the table add softness. Another great way to add some inexpensive color to a room is throw pillows. Even if you have invested in a neutral sofa, just toss a couple of throw pillows on and suddenly you have instant color. In this case we chose pillows in red, green, and orange to give the room some energy without creating too many focal points for the eyes. Prints and plants can lighten and brighten any room, so let’s not overlook these easy accents. Plants provide a variety of color and add texture to the room. Now if you don’t have a green thumb, there is no need to worry because there are very good replica lines are out there. Prints, or artwork, are a little more difficult to select. You want something that ties all the colors together, and can be a focal point if you choose. The piece we selected for the room has the same energy and color palette that exists in the room to pull everything together. See, its really not so bad. All one has to do is break the room down simply and do what you can. Even if you don’t want to change the larger items, you can still create change with smaller accent pieces.
